Obama Has Selfie Game!

Obama Has Selfie Game

President Obama has always been ahead of the curve with social media. Many credit his double wins of the White House to outmaneuvering campaign opponents on social outlets like Facebook and Twitter. And now, he’s done it again; he’s bested his own past social media success with a new selfie video made in cooperation with BuzzFeed. It’s taking the Internet by storm!

The video, entitled Things Everyone Does But Doesn’t Talk About, is designed to encourage people to sign up for healthcare. But what’s absolutely incredible about the video is the President’s demonstration of his selfie game. Regardless of your political views, it’s hard to deny that Obama is pretty hip to the selfie!

The President strikes a variety of selfie moves, all of which are admirable in quality and creativity. Let’s examine a few of his Oval Office selfie poses:

  1. The Classic Smile – This ought to be a staple in everyone’s selfie repertoire. Smiles make the world go round. Obama’s got nice teeth and a handsome, classic jaw line that exudes confidence. He’s smart to lead with a smile. We might be going out on a limb here, but other world leaders *cough* Valdimir Putin *cough* could potentially drive higher approval numbers if they smiled a bit more.
  2. The One-Eyed Tongue Selfie – Obama seems to be subtly imitating an emoji when he closes one eye and sticks his tongue out. We suspect that this sequence is a social hommage to the millions of young people using emoji everyday in social communication. Other politicians would be wise to improve their emoji practice, not to mention go to the lengths President Obama has with actually posing as an emoji for his selfie. It’s clever, to say the least.
  3. The Aviator Selfie – Obama has a Top Gun/Tom Cruise thing going on when dons the Ray-Bans and crosses his arms. A lot of you may be too young to remember a time before Tom Cruise was more than Operating Thetan Level VIII, but you older Millennials and Gen Xers certainly recall Maverick as an international heartthrob. Obama leverages a timeless accessory, his good looks, and advanced selfie game to invoke some serious aviator selfie prowess. Pretty cool.
  4. Selfie Stick – OK, so this is less about a specific pose and more about his overall confidence with selfie’ing technology. We’ve written other pieces on the use of selfie sticks – some of you are not quite as comfortable with the tools as others – and we recognize that selfie sticks represent a heightened level of selfie experience. Clearly, Obama is among the leading-edge of Boomers who selfie. He’s got game.

It will be interesting to see if other politicians can successfully emulate the President’s leadership in modern selfie style. There’s plenty of time between now and the 2016 election, so our advice to all of the candidates serious about running would be – get after it, get practicing and get comfortable with selfies now because they’re going to play a pivotal roll in determining who wins the White House!
